Nine years ago, I started working at Payt when the team consisted of only 9 people. Most colleagues call me Benji (Benjamin) because I was the youngest in the team for a long time. I’m no longer the youngest, but the name has stuck with me 🙂

Right after I completed my Communication & Multimedia Design studies at NHL in Leeuwarden, I got in touch with my then-colleague Sebastiaan through a message on Twitter. He was looking for a Ruby on Rails developer. Since I had gained experience with Ruby on Rails in several projects during my studies, I reached out and a week later I was working at Payt.

In the beginning, I wasn’t quite sure which direction of web development suited me best (frontend or backend). At Payt, I was given all the space to develop in this area, and eventually, I discovered that backend suited me the most. I have always been given a lot of freedom, and I was also made responsible for setting up a completely new infrastructure, which enabled us to scale better. Thanks to all this freedom, I have been able to learn a lot. This is also one of the reasons why I still enjoy working at Payt; you really get the space to learn new things, and the personal growth of employees is always a priority.

What also works very well is that at Payt, we don’t have managers who act as intermediaries between the customer and the developer. This way, I often have direct contact with partners or large clients, and my work doesn’t just consist of programming, but also involves some planning and customer contact. Personally, I find this variety very enjoyable!

Besides work, Payt also finds it important that we enjoy ourselves outside of work hours. We often organize fun drinks and outings. All in all, Payt is a great employer, and I work with pleasure on our beautiful platform every day.
