What is a Peppol ID?

A Peppol ID is a unique identification number that allows an organization to register on the Peppol network. This network enables businesses and governments around the world to securely and consistently exchange electronic documents, such as e-invoices. With a Peppol ID, systems know exactly where to deliver an e-invoice.

Why is a Peppol ID important?

A Peppol ID ensures your organization is visible and reachable on the Peppol network. Without a Peppol ID, you can’t send or receive e-invoices through the network. For many organizations, e-invoicing via Peppol is essential because it:

  • is faster and more secure than traditional invoicing
  • reduces manual input errors
  • allows for direct integration with accounting or ERP systems

Peppol usage continues to grow globally, with more and more countries requiring companies to use electronic invoicing.

The different Peppol Identifiers

A Peppol ID consists of two parts: a Scheme ID and a Participant ID. Together, they form a unique address on the Peppol network. For example: 0208:0123456789.

Common scheme ID’s include:

  • 0088: Stands for GLN (Global Location Number), used internationally by companies with multiple locations or departments.
  • 9930: Stands for GLN (Global Location Number), also commonly used by international companies including those in the U.S.

The Scheme ID defines what kind of registration is used for the Peppol ID.

How do you get a Peppol ID?

You receive a Peppol ID when your organization is registered through a Peppol Access Point. This is a certified service provider that gives you access to the Peppol network. Once registration is complete, your organization is linked to a unique Peppol ID.

Many accounting and invoicing software platforms can handle this registration for you, so you automatically receive a valid Peppol ID.

Can you have multiple Peppol IDs?

Yes, it’s possible to have more than one Peppol ID. Some companies choose to register different identifiers, such as one based on their Employer Identification Number (EIN) and another based on their TAX ID or GLN number.

This is sometimes necessary because clients or countries may require specific types of identification, or because the business has multiple legal entities.

How to look up a Peppol ID

Need to find a company’s Peppol ID? In many cases, you can search for it in the official Peppol Directory, which lists registered companies worldwide. You can search by company name, registration number, or VAT number to find the correct Peppol ID before sending an e-invoice.

Some invoicing and administrative software tools also include built-in Peppol ID lookup functions, so you can search directly within your billing or ERP system.

What if you send an invoice to the wrong Peppol ID?

If you send an e-invoice to the wrong Peppol ID, it may not reach the intended organization. Unfortunately, once a document is sent through the Peppol network, it cannot be recalled. If this happens, follow these steps:

  • Correct the identifier in your system
  • Create a credit note for the incorrect invoice
  • Send the correct invoice to the correct Peppol ID

To avoid these issues, always verify Peppol IDs in advance and manage them carefully in your invoicing system.
